In UPS applications, energy storage is a key element to ensure the continuity of the energy supply to critical loads.

Generally, the UPS energy storage function uses a lead acid battery which constitutes an important share of the overall installation costs. Thus, it is essential to consider battery management carefully for economic as well as technical and safety reasons.

One of the objectives of battery management is the collection of sufficient accurate data to be able to anticipate the battery’s health.

The supply of back-up energy to the load must be guaranteed over the battery’s whole working life time, therefore it is important to determine when the battery will need replacing to optimise the investment.

The aim of this document is to define an efficient battery maintenance program for the acid lead batteries used in UPS applications.
